Description

Juan Carlos Sancha · DOCa Rioja

Single-vineyard Garnacha from the Alto Najerilla, planted in 1917 at 650 metres in a south-facing amphitheatre. The soils are poor, shallow and clay-limestone. The grapes are destemmed and fermented directly in 500-litre Tronçais French oak barrels, where the wine ages for eleven months. It does not complete malolactic fermentation.

Juan Carlos Sancha

Small winery in the Alto Najerilla, one of the coldest areas of Rioja, run by Juan Carlos Sancha, a viticulture lecturer who champions minor grape varieties. He farms century-old Garnacha vines organically and has driven the revival of Maturana Blanca, Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Tinta and Monastel, all approved by the Consejo Regulador in 2008. Short productions and single-plot wines.

Appearance

Deep red with bluish highlights.

Between 16 and 18 °C. Best opened a little while before serving.
