Description

Bodegas Estefanía (Tilenus) · DO Bierzo

Mencía from hillside plots at 600 to 800 metres, with vines of eighty to ninety years and slopes too steep for any mechanisation. Yields are low and the harvest is by hand. Part of the wine ferments with the stems. It spends fourteen to sixteen months in French oak barrels and is bottled unfiltered and unfined. Around 14% abv.

The winery

Bodegas Estefanía (Tilenus)

Bodegas Estefanía was founded in 1999, when the Frías family converted a former dairy plant in the village of Dehesas, in Ponferrada (León). It farms around 40 hectares of old-vine mencía and godello in the DO Bierzo, on mineral, clay-rich soils in a valley with a continental climate and Atlantic influence. The winery is built from slate, stone and wood, as local architecture dictates, and the ageing cellar holds nearly a thousand Bordeaux-style French oak barrels.
